英語構文・文法の土台第24回: 名詞化・動詞化・簡潔さ

名詞化は、行動をものとして扱う形。

decide を make a decision にすると、行動が少し重く、文書っぽくなる。validate を perform validation にすると、処理名としては使えるが、日常のPRコメントでは硬く見えることがある。

動詞中心は速い

We decided to roll back.

動詞中心は、誰が何をしたかがすぐ見える。チャット、PRレビュー、障害対応では基本的にこちらが自然。

名詞中心は文書っぽい

We made a decision to roll back.
We performed validation on the input.
An update was made to the docs.

名詞中心は、手順書、報告書、正式な説明では使える。ただし多すぎると、責任者や行動が見えにくくなる。

名詞化が便利な場面

The rollback reduced error rates.
The migration requires a short maintenance window.
The investigation is still ongoing.

行動全体を話題にしたいときは名詞化が便利。rollback, migration, investigation のように、出来事や作業を一つの対象として扱える。

日本語トラップ

「〜を行う」に引っ張られすぎない

Heavy: We performed an investigation of the issue.
Natural: We investigated the issue.

日本語の「調査を行う」は自然でも、英語では動詞1語のほうが軽いことが多い。

受け身 + 名詞化で責任者が消える

Vague: A decision was made to disable the job.
Clear: We decided to disable the job.

正式な報告では受け身も使うが、実務の連絡では we を出したほうが速い。

`make` で何でも作らない

Awkward: make a deploy
Natural: deploy
Natural: run a deployment

make a decision, make a change, make an update は自然。だが、すべての名詞に make が使えるわけではない。

障害対応

The mitigation reduced the impact, but it did not fix the root cause.
