Noun Phrase Stack

名詞句は、英語の情報密度を上げるためのかたまり。

まず中心名詞を見つける。前にある語はラベル、後ろにある語は説明として見る。

ニュアンス比較

前から固める / 後ろから説明する

the production database
the database in production

production database は「本番DB」というラベル。database in production は「本番環境にあるDB」と説明している感じ。

latest / last / recent

the latest version
the last release
a recent incident

latest は最新版・直近で一番新しいもの。last は最後・前回。recent は最近のものだが、1つに特定しない。

high-priority / urgent / important

a high-priority task
an urgent issue
an important decision

high-priority は優先順位が高い。urgent は時間的に急ぎ。important は重要度が高い。

日本語トラップ

名詞をつなげすぎる

Hard to read: user profile image upload validation error handling
Better: error handling for user profile image upload validation
Better: validation error handling for profile image uploads

名詞を前に積みすぎると読みにくい。3語以上続くなら、for, of, in で分ける。

形容詞の順番を気にしすぎない

a small reusable helper
a reusable small helper

自然な順番はあるが、実務ではまず「中心名詞が何か」を伝えるほうが大事。迷ったら短く分ける。

`of` を使いすぎる

Stiff: the screen of login
Natural: the login screen

Stiff: the speed of response
Natural: the response speed
Natural: the response time

技術英語では、名詞を前に置いてラベル化する形が多い。
