英語構文・文法の土台第9回: 冠詞・可算不可算

Articles and Countability

冠詞は、日本語話者にとって最も抜けやすい土台の一つ。

まずは細かい例外より、次の3つで見る。

a / an	ひとつの輪郭がある、初登場	I found a bug.
the	話し手と聞き手がどれか分かる	The bug is in the auth flow.
無冠詞	一般論、材料、抽象概念	Feedback is helpful.

a は「ひとつのものとして数える」。the は「例のそれ」。無冠詞は「種類全体・概念・量として見る」。

ニュアンス比較

a bug / the bug / bugs

I found a bug.
The bug happens only in production.
Bugs happen when requirements are unclear.

a bug は初登場の1件。the bug は共有済みのそのバグ。bugs はバグ一般。

feedback / a comment / the feedback

I got feedback from the reviewer.
I got a comment from the reviewer.
The feedback was helpful.

feedback は普通は不可算。1つずつ数えたいなら a comment, a suggestion, a piece of feedback を使う。

work / a task / the task

I have a lot of work today.
I have a task to finish today.
The task is blocked by the API change.

work は作業量として見るので不可算。task は輪郭がある作業単位なので可算。

日本語トラップ

`information` と `advice`

NG: an information
OK: some information
OK: a piece of information

NG: an advice
OK: some advice
OK: a piece of advice

日本語では「情報1つ」「助言1つ」と言えるが、英語では information と advice は基本的に不可算。

`feedback` を数えない

NG: I got many feedbacks.
OK: I got a lot of feedback.
OK: I got several comments.

数を出したいなら comments や suggestions にする。

`the` を「その」とだけ覚えない

I joined the meeting.
The release is scheduled for Friday.

the は「その」と訳せないことも多い。聞き手がどれか分かるもの、予定済みのもの、文脈上ひとつに決まるものに付く。

The issue happens only on mobile.
I need more information before I can estimate it.

PR review

Thanks for the feedback.
I left a small suggestion about the naming.
The validation logic looks good overall.

Incident

We saw an increase in error rates after the deployment.
The root cause was a missing environment variable.
We need more data before making a decision.
