英語構文・文法の土台第2回: 時制・相・状態変化

Tense and Aspect

時制は「いつ」、相は「どう見ているか」。

日本語では同じ「やった」「やっている」でも、英語では、完了した事実なのか、今も続いているのか、今の状態につながっているのかを分ける。

形	中心イメージ	例
現在形	習慣・一般事実	I work on backend APIs.
過去形	過去の一点	I worked on it yesterday.
現在完了	過去から今への接続	I’ve worked on this before.
進行形	途中・一時的	I’m working on it now.
受動態	された状態・焦点の移動	The issue was fixed.

ニュアンス比較

I worked on it / I’ve worked on it / I’m working on it

I worked on it yesterday.
I've worked on it before.
I'm working on it now.

worked は過去の作業を点で見る。I've worked は「経験が今の話に関係している」。I'm working は今まさに途中。

finished / have finished

I finished the task yesterday.
I've finished the task, so I can pick up the next one.

過去形は「いつ終わったか」に寄りやすい。現在完了は「終わった結果、今どうか」に寄りやすい。

was fixed / got fixed

The bug was fixed in the latest release.
The bug got fixed after we updated the dependency.

was fixed は中立的な受動態。got fixed は状態変化の感じが少し強い。会話では got のほうが軽い。

日本語トラップ

「今やっています」

NG: I do it now.
OK: I'm working on it now.
OK: I'm doing it now.

今まさに途中なら進行形。I do it は習慣や一般事実に聞こえやすい。

「前にそれをやったことがあります」

NG: I did it before.  # 文脈によってはOKだが、経験なら弱い
OK: I've done it before.

経験を今の判断材料として出すなら現在完了が自然。

「所属しています」

NG: I'm belonging to the backend team.
OK: I belong to the backend team.

belong は状態を表す動詞なので、通常は進行形にしない。

実務例文

Standup

I worked on the search endpoint yesterday.
I'm working on the integration tests today.
I've fixed the validation issue, but I still need to update the docs.

PR review

The naming was updated based on the review comment.
I've left a few comments on the error handling.
This function is doing too many things.

Incident

The service went down around 10 a.m.
We're investigating the root cause.
The issue has been mitigated, but we're still monitoring it.
