英語構文・文法の土台第11回: 代名詞・this/that/it の参照

代名詞は、前に出た情報をもう一度使うためのショートカット。

英語の会議、PRコメント、技術記事では、it, this, that, they が何を指しているかを追えるかどうかで理解度が大きく変わる。

it	すでに出た単体・状況	It fails in production.
this	今話しているもの、近い論点	This makes the flow clearer.
that	少し離れた論点、前の発言	That sounds reasonable.
they	複数、または性別を限定しない単数	They left a comment.
one	同じ種類のものを受ける	This helper is clearer than the old one.

ニュアンス比較

it / this

The deployment failed. It blocked the release.
The deployment failed. This blocked the release.

it は the deployment をそのまま受ける感じ。this は「デプロイ失敗という出来事全体」を受けやすい。

this / that

This looks risky.
That makes sense.

this は今見ている案やコードに近い。that は相手の発言や少し前の内容を受ける感じ。

one / it

I updated the old helper because it was hard to test.
This helper is clearer than the old one.

it は同じもの。one は同じ種類の別個体。

日本語トラップ

`this` が何を指すか曖昧

Unclear: This is bad.
Clear: This naming is confusing.
Clear: This approach makes retries harder to test.

this だけだと強く、曖昧に聞こえることがある。実務では this naming, this approach, this change のように名詞を足すと安全。

`it` で文全体を受けすぎる

Unclear: The API returns null when the user is deleted, and it breaks the UI.
Clear: The null response breaks the UI.

it の指す先が複数ありそうなら、名詞で言い直す。

`they` は複数だけではない

The reviewer said they would take another look.

性別を限定しない単数の人にも they が使われる。実務では自然で安全。
