英語構文・文法の土台第4回: 節で長い文を読む

中心イメージ

節は、文の中に入る小さな文。

英語の長い文は、たいてい「主文 + 追加情報」でできている。節を見抜けると、会議資料、Issue、PRコメント、英語記事が一気に読みやすくなる。

名詞節	文を名詞として使う	What I mean is that we need more context.
関係詞節	名詞を後ろから説明する	The issue that we discussed is still open.
副詞節	時・理由・条件を添える	If the error rate increases, we should roll back.
条件節	条件と結果をつなぐ	Unless we add a test, this may regress.

ニュアンス比較

what / that

What I mean is that the current API is hard to test.
I think that the current API is hard to test.

what I mean is ... は「言いたいことは」という焦点づけ。I think that ... は普通に意見を述べる形。

that / which / who

The issue that we discussed yesterday is still open.
The script which generates the report failed.
The reviewer who left the comment is on vacation.

関係詞節は、名詞の後ろに説明を足す。日本語は前から説明するが、英語は後ろから足す感覚に慣れる。

if / when / unless

If the test fails again, I'll look into it.
When the deployment finishes, I'll update the thread.
Unless we add validation, invalid data can slip through.

if は条件。when は起きる前提のタイミング。unless は「〜しない限り」。

日本語トラップ

`what` と `that` の混同

NG: That I mean is we need more context.
OK: What I mean is we need more context.
OK: I mean that we need more context.

what I mean は「私が意味していること」。that I mean では文の主語になりにくい。

関係詞節を前から訳しすぎる

The bug that we fixed yesterday came back.

日本語では「昨日直したバグが戻った」。英語では The bug を先に出して、that we fixed yesterday で後ろから説明する。

`if` と `when`

If the deployment finishes, I'll update you.
When the deployment finishes, I'll update you.

if は終わるかどうか未確定に聞こえる。通常終わる前提なら when のほうが自然。

実務例文

Meeting

What I'm concerned about is the migration risk.
The point I want to clarify is who owns the follow-up.
If we agree on the scope today, we can start implementation tomorrow.

PR review

The function that handles retries is getting hard to read.
What I suggest is splitting the validation into a helper.
Unless we cover this edge case, the bug may come back.

Incident

When the error rate drops below the threshold, we'll re-enable the feature.
The alert that fired at 10 a.m. was caused by a downstream timeout.
If this happens again, we should page the database team.
