並列は、同じ役割のものを同じ形で並べる感覚。

英語では、リストの中身の形がそろっていると読みやすい。逆に、名詞、動詞、文が混ざると、意味は通っても仕事の文章として読みにくくなる。

ニュアンス比較

and / or / but

This improves reliability and reduces latency.
We can revert the change or add a feature flag.
This works, but it adds operational cost.

and は追加、or は選択、but は逆接。基本だが、実務の説明ではこの3つだけでかなりの判断を表せる。

either…or / neither…nor

We can either roll back the deployment or disable the job.
Neither the API nor the worker is responding.

either...or は「どちらか」。neither...nor は「どちらも違う」。少し硬めだが、障害対応や設計判断で便利。

not only…but also

This not only fixes the bug but also simplifies the validation logic.

「AだけでなくBも」。B側に少し強調が乗る。PR説明では、修正の副次効果を言うときに使いやすい。

日本語トラップ

形がそろっていないリスト

NG: This change improves performance, reliability, and makes debugging easier.
OK: This change improves performance, reliability, and debuggability.
OK: This change improves performance, increases reliability, and makes debugging easier.

名詞で並べるなら全部名詞。動詞句で並べるなら全部動詞句。

`either` の位置が遠すぎる

Awkward: We either can roll back or add a feature flag.
Natural: We can either roll back or add a feature flag.

either は、並列する2つの選択肢の直前に置くと読みやすい。

日本語の「AやBなど」をそのまま曖昧にしすぎる

Vague: We should check logs, metrics, and so on.
Clear: We should check the logs, metrics, and recent deployments.

実務では and so on より、見る対象を具体化したほうが伝わる。

実務例文

会議

We need to decide whether to release today or wait until Monday.
This option reduces risk but delays the launch.
The goal is to keep the scope small and make the rollout observable.

チャット

I can either update the PR or split this into a follow-up.
Let's check the logs, metrics, and deployment history.
This looks simple but touches shared code.

PRレビュー

This change makes the validation stricter and the error message clearer.
Could we either add a test for this branch or document why it is unreachable?
The helper should parse the input, validate the fields, and return a typed result.

障害対応

The API is responding, but the worker is still backed up.
We can either pause the queue or increase worker capacity.
Neither the database nor the cache shows an error spike.
