turn は、スイッチを入れる、方向を変える、別の状態に変える、後から結果がわかる、という場面で使う。

pass は、手から手へ渡す、誰かに伝える、試験やチェックを通過する、別の人やチームに責任を移す、という場面で使う。

ソフトウェアエンジニア実務では、turn は feature flag、logging、traffic、結果判明に出やすい。pass は context、ticket、ownership、CI、review checks に出やすい。

turn on / turn off は、電気、テレビ、通知、機能、設定にそのまま広げられる。

pass + 物 / 場所 / テスト / 選択

pass は「通る」「渡す」「通過する」。日常では物を渡す、場所を通る、試験に通る、誘いや選択肢を見送る場面で使う。

デザートは遠慮します。

pass on ... は「遠慮する」の意味もある。pass on the message なら「メッセージを伝える」なので、後ろの名詞で意味が変わる。

turn on / turn off

turn on ... は「有効にする」、turn off ... は「無効にする」。仕事では設定、通知、機能、計測、ログに使いやすい。

Let's turn off the reminder for now.
We should turn on tracking before the launch.

enable / disable より会話的。仕様書、設定画面、コードコメントでは enable / disable も自然。

turn into

turn A into B は「AをBに変える」。メモを企画にする、会話をタスクにする、苦情を改善案にする、という流れで使える。

Let's turn this draft into a short proposal.
Can we turn the discussion into action items?
The customer report turned into a larger investigation.

make A into B も使えるが、turn into は「状態が変わってBになる」感覚が強い。

turn out

turn out ... は「結果的にそうなる」「後でそうだと判明する」。会議、調査、障害対応でとても便利。

It turned out to be a small data issue.
As it turned out, we did not need a full migration.
Everything turned out better than expected.

日本語の「結果として」「調べたら」に近い。it was だけより、調査や時間の経過を含められる。

turn to

turn to someone は「誰かに頼る」「相談先として向かう」。困ったときに誰を頼ったかを言う。

We turned to the finance team for guidance.
Who should we turn to for approval?

ask は「聞く」。turn to は「助けや判断を求めて頼る」感じがある。

pass along / pass on

pass along ... は「情報を伝達する」。pass on ... も同じ意味で使えるが、pass on this option のように「見送る」の意味もある。

I'll pass the message along.
Could you pass this feedback on to the team?
Please pass along any customer concerns.

曖昧さを避けたいときは、情報伝達には pass along、見送りには pass on を使うとわかりやすい。

pass to

pass ... to someone/team は「相手へ渡す」。ビジネスでは、チケット、依頼、文脈、責任、所有権を渡すときに使う。

Let's pass this request to Legal.
Can you pass the context to Support?
We'll pass ownership to the platform team after the handoff.

send は送る動作。pass to は、次の担当者へつなぐ感じがある。

pass review / pass the checks

pass は「基準を通る」。テスト、レビュー、審査、チェックに使う。

The proposal passed review.
The security check passed.
All checks passed before the release.

「CIを通る」は、英語では CI passed よりも the checks passed、the build passed、the tests passed が自然なことが多い。

turn to rollout risk は「議論がロールアウトリスクの話に移った」。talk about より、話題の流れが変わった感じが出る。

PR review では、チェック通過、修正依頼の差し戻し、別PR化、文脈共有に使う。

All checks passed, but I left one naming comment.

I'll pass this back to the author for a small fix.
Please pass along the context from the previous review.

pass this back to the author は「作者に戻す」。レビューで追加修正をお願いするときに使える。

Release / deploy

リリースでは、feature flag、logging、traffic、smoke test によく合う。

We'll turn on the feature flag for 10% of users.
Let's turn off verbose logging after the rollout.
The smoke tests passed in staging.
If error rates increase, we'll turn traffic away from the new service.

turn on the feature flag は会話で自然。正式な手順書では enable the feature flag も自然。

Incident / support

障害対応では、情報の受け渡し、原因判明、チケット移管、回避策共有に使える。

turn into / become

become は「なる」。turn into は「変化して別のものになる」。

turn out / find out

find out は「知る・発見する」。turn out は「結果としてそうだと判明する」。

自分たちの調査行為を強調するなら find out。結果の判明を自然に言うなら turn out。

forward はメールやメッセージを転送する動作。share は共有する。pass along は、相手が使えるように情報を次へ渡す感じ。

pass on / skip / decline

pass on ... は「今回は見送る」。skip は飛ばす。decline は丁寧に断る。

このステップを飛ばしましょう。

招待を辞退しました。

pass on は会話的で柔らかい。正式な拒否には decline が合う。
