日常会話で使う keep / hold

keep + adjective は「その状態を保つ」。

Keep calm.
落ち着いて。

Keep the door closed.
ドアを閉めたままにして。

keep a secret は「秘密を持ち続ける」ではなく「秘密を漏らさない」。

hold + 物 / 人 / 場

hold は「つかんで保つ」感覚が強い。

これを持っていてくれる？

hold on は電話や会話で「ちょっと待って」。wait より会話的。

ビジネス会話で使う keep / hold

keep track of

keep track of ... は「追跡する」「把握し続ける」。タスク、課題、数字、変更点に使う。

We need to keep track of open questions.
Could you keep track of the action items?
I use this spreadsheet to keep track of expenses.

track だけでも動詞として使えるが、keep track of は「継続して把握する」感じが強い。

keep in mind

keep in mind は「念頭に置く」。注意点、制約、前提、相手の事情を忘れずに考えるときに使う。

Keep in mind that the timeline may change.
We should keep the customer impact in mind.

会議で反論をやわらげるときにも便利。

That's a good idea, but let's keep the budget in mind.

keep someone posted

keep someone posted は「随時共有する」。進捗、障害、判断待ちの状況を相手に伝え続ける。

I'll keep you posted.
Please keep the team posted on any changes.

give an update は一回の更新。keep someone posted は継続的な共有。

hold a meeting / review

hold a meeting は「会議を開く」。have a meeting より少しフォーマルで、開催する側の感じが出る。

We're holding a short planning meeting tomorrow.
Let's hold a review before we finalize the plan.

日常会話では have a meeting のほうが自然なことも多い。仕事で「正式に場を設ける」なら hold が合う。

hold off on

hold off on ... は「いったん待つ」「まだやらないでおく」。リリース、意思決定、発表、採用などに使う。

Let's hold off on the announcement until Legal reviews it.
We should hold off on hiring until the budget is confirmed.

put ... on hold は対象を保留にする。hold off on ... は自分たちが行動を少し待つ。

朝会では、課題追跡、スコープ維持、進捗共有、ブロッカーに使える。

hold up は「遅らせる」。The flaky test is holding up the deploy は「不安定なテストがデプロイを止めている / 遅らせている」。

Meeting

会議では、前提、議題、レビュー、意思決定待ちを整理できる。

Let's keep the customer impact in mind.
Can we keep this discussion focused on the API contract?
We should hold a short design review before implementation.
Let's hold off on the final decision until we see the data.

keep this discussion focused は「議論を焦点の合った状態に保つ」。会議が広がりすぎたときに使える。

PR review

PR review では、変更範囲、設計意図、レビュー待ち、リスクを扱う。

Let's keep this PR small.
Please keep the naming consistent with the existing API.
This dependency is holding up the review.
Can we hold off on this refactor until the next PR?

keep the naming consistent は「命名を一貫した状態に保つ」。コードレビューでかなり使いやすい。

Release / deploy

リリースでは、スコープ、監視、可用性、延期判断に使う。

Let's keep the release scope small.
Keep an eye on the error rate after deploy.
We should hold off on the release until staging is stable.
The database migration held up the rollout.

keep an eye on ... は「注意して見る」「監視する」。監視対象を軽く伝えるときに自然。

Incident / support

障害対応では、冷静さ、共有、影響範囲、復旧判断に使える。

Let's keep the incident channel updated.
Keep in mind that some users may still be affected.
The upstream outage is holding up recovery.
We held a quick post-incident review after mitigation.

keep the incident channel updated は「障害対応チャンネルを最新状態に保つ」。update the channel より、継続的に更新する感じが強い。

似た表現との違い

keep / hold

どちらも「保つ」に見えるが、焦点が違う。

Keep the system running.
システムを動き続ける状態に保つ。

Hold the release until staging is stable.
ステージングが安定するまでリリースを止めておく。

keep は状態の維持。hold は動きを止める、支える、または場を持つ。

keep track of / track

track は「追跡する」。keep track of は「継続して把握する」。

We track errors in Datadog.
Datadogでエラーを追跡しています。

We need to keep track of open issues.
未解決の課題を継続して把握する必要があります。

人が管理し続ける感じを出すなら keep track of が合う。

keep in mind / remember

remember は「覚えている / 思い出す」。keep in mind は「判断するときに考慮に入れる」。

Remember to update the ticket.
チケットを更新するのを忘れないで。

Keep the security risk in mind.
セキュリティリスクを念頭に置いて。

注意点や制約を共有するなら keep in mind。

hold off on / put on hold

hold off on ... は「実行を待つ」。put ... on hold は「対象を保留状態にする」。

Let's hold off on the release.
リリースはいったん待ちましょう。

Let's put the release on hold.
リリースを保留にしましょう。

意味は近いが、hold off on は行動を遅らせる感じ、put on hold は案件や作業の状態を変える感じ。

hold up / block

block は「完全に妨げる」。hold up は「遅らせる」。

The missing approval is blocking the release.
承認不足がリリースを完全に止めています。

The slow review is holding up the release.
レビューの遅れがリリースを遅らせています。

完全停止なら block。遅延なら hold up。
